Do parents of today spend too much on their childrens birthday parties?

i have seem parents rent limos for 10 yr olds birthday parties, rent out places like chucky cheese, and even plan major parties. even i have paid for 25 kids to skate a day away in celebration of my childs birthday......... has this become the new norm? this year i am thinking of having a party for only family but somehow i feel like a trader, but hasnt this gone too far?Do parents of today spend too much on their childrens birthday parties?
This was happening in our area too, and we just thought it was nuts. We "rebelled" and the kids always LOVED our birthday parties. We always had them at home, with a theme and games, food and cake. We only started going out for activities when our son was around 10 - did watersliding at a local hotel, because I was ill.

Our son is a teen now, and kids still talk about the Medieval birthday we had, when my son was into castles and knights, probably around 9 years old - we had shields made, games with the theme - including banana jousting in the backyard.Do parents of today spend too much on their childrens birthday parties?
Yes, parents spend to much on their children. If they can afford they will do it.

This is my sons first b-day and we aren't going all that out on it. I spent maybe $100 on gifts and then the cake and decorations... so a grand total of $150... its not to bad.
They do because it is all about the Jon sis. Why do i have to compete with my neighbor about who is the better child. " NOT" but who is the most insercure parent.Do parents of today spend too much on their childrens birthday parties?
yes...no doubt about it..
I think parents do spend too much by far!!! What happened to the days where a slumber party with a few friends and a cake your mom made was good enough?

I am guilty myself of spending too much. Although we always keep it to just family we still tend to spend a lot. Like for my daughters this year (their birthdays are only a couple weeks apart) we went to the Mall of America and they basically had run of the mall whatever they wanted to do we let them. It was just my kids, my cousins kids, and me and my mom. But we still spent a lot of money between their favorite restaurant, rides, their three favorite stores etc.Do parents of today spend too much on their childrens birthday parties?
yes
ABSOLUTELY! Parents are spending WAY too much on children's birthday parties!!! And personally I'm getting sick and tired of my kids being invited to these "mega parties" where kids invite the entire class, even if they aren't friends with my kids. I don't mind taking my kids to parties for their true friends and buying gifts, ect.

For my kids birthdays we buy a large cake at sams club for $18.00 and some ice cream for $3.50 and invite family over for cake and ice cream.
Yes parent spend to much on Birthday parties and everything else. Having a family only party is fine.
Yes parents of today are becoming ridiculous. My mom and I always had my parties on a budget and made a lot of our favors and decorations. I think no matter how much you spend, the child will still have fond memories. I didn't need limos and diamonds, and still remember my birthdays and childhood memories as wonderful.
HEL Yes! I'm sure of that. I went all out for my lil girls 1st birthday party. That she slept through. I had to wake her up so she could blow out her candles. 150 to rent a moonwalk. 80 on food 100 on party favor. 150 on pictures And this is all the big stuff. That's y she is not having a 2 year old party I'm still recovering from the first. Oh yeah she is an only child so i went all out. But I feel stupid now.
Yes they do. I think if they can afford that it is ok but I sure hope the know what discipline means. That is were parents fail.
YES YES YES!!! It has gotten so out of hand. Kids just expect this kind of treatment for everything in life. What a disappointment when they get older and realize life isn't always glamorous and lavish.
I definitely think so. My daughter's birthday is the week after a vacation that we always take with my extended family. We go to the beach with all my aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and half the time relatives of people who married into the family or roommates or best friends come too. So we just have the party at the beach. We get a sheet cake and people can get her little presents if they want but it's completely optional. The biggest present for us is getting to spend time with our family and her getting to play with all her cousins. That's worth more to us than any expensive fancy party with kids our daughter just knows from daycare or school. When she gets older we'll probably just let her bring a friend along and that will be her party still.
Yes. It is done to "keep up with the Jones'" and it just creates little brats who think they are entitled to expensive gifts and parties all the time.

We had our child's birthday party last year at the park and I made her cake. We have the money to rent out a huge party hall or hire clowns, bouncy houses, etc, but why waste all that money??? My child is young and her young friends just want to run around, play and eat cake. They just want to be normal kids. You don't need to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to let the kids have a good time.

People should be saving this money for their kids college fund!
yes they do, my sister spends a lot on my neices parties, and she is only 3, well she will be 4. She does it because when we were younger we did not have much growing up, so she wants to give her everything that we did not have, but sometimes she over does it, for her 3rd birthday party she spent about $5,000, and she is not a rich person, i know she went a little over board with it.
Yes, kids of this day and age are spoiled brats!
